Genre- Adventure

Genre conventions- A adventure movie is one long quest with a succession of different challenges, each one more frightening and seemingly impossible than the one before. Producers challenge in this type of genre is to ramp up the tension as the movie progresses. Usually from age 12 to adult.

The fonts on the movie boards are usually very grand. The font tries to put emphasis on the task at hand in every movie. Each movie board for adventure movies also puts the main actor or most famous one on the cover. For instance, the cover of mission impossible is Tom Cruise. This helps advertise the movie since Tom Cruise is very well known. Other techniques are camera techniques in the film. For instance, pan, zoom, and tracking camera movements are tricks commonly used in this type of genre. In the editing portion of the film cuts are used to show relationships. Lastly, adventurous movies usually have a specific mise-en scene, just like in star wars there is the futuristic feel due to many aspects.

This film embodies this genre in many ways. First based on this movie cover. The main character is clearly on the head of a panther and a futuristic city is behind is under him. This helps give the grand look of an adventurous movie. In addition, this movie also has many different types of fighting scenes that uses tracking shots to help keep the audience on edge. During this movie there is always one big problem that is accompanied with smaller problems to lead up to the climax. Many cuts are used to show the relationship between the protagonist and antagonist.

This movie also embodies this genre in many ways. To start off the movie cover has all the main characters. Each character is a different superhero. By putting all of the ones in the movies the advertising becomes great due to the fact that little kids are drawn toward superheros so the more put on the cover the more people are gonna wanna see it. This movie also uses a grand problem to create different adventurous that keeps the audience watching. As the movie transitions from setting to setting the key issue is Thanos getting all infinity stones.

An issue that I would like to represent through this genre is racism. Racism is the discrimination of groups of people because one feels superior to them. One example within the media of this issue is represented is the movie Schindler’s list. This movie is about World War 2. A man called Oskar Schindler living is living in Poland when Nazis’ take over. Schindler is concerned with his Jewish workforce after witnessing what the Nazis’ were doing to them. As a result, Schindler begins to protect Jews. This is a good representation of the issue because its a historic example of racism put in a movie.

Another representation of this video through media is the movie 12 years a slave. This movie is about a man named Solomon Northup that is a free black man living in New York. Solomon's life takes an extreme turn when he gets kidnapped and sold into slavery. Solomon now must go through many different types of cruelty until his 12th year as a slave is his last. This is also a great representation of racism due to the fact that slavery is colored people put to work because they are not considered a “person” at that time which is absurd.

I feel that these media examples have good representation characteristics. I think they are correct when it comes to representing racism in a certain period of time. I would retain the inequality portion of each movie. But the cruelty part I would not be able to retain because racism is in different forms not a days and not so much through cruelty. I would have to challenge the cruelty part because it's not a true representation of how it is occurring in the present.

Aice Media Blogs

1.Horror

  1. Typical target audience- 15-25 year olds
  2. The mise-en-scene is a isolated dark place with very bad weather, the props normally used are antiques and weapons that are made to enhance the characters dark or sinister look. Some production techniques are shoot through things such as windows, underexposure so tone down the footage to darken it, haze the film to create texture, and unique angles.
  3. Creating a narrative image begins with a suspenseful tone and a lot of descriptive language to get the audience engaged in the narrative. Marketing these type of films are by creating a suspenseful trailer. A suspenseful trailer can engage the audience members to now want to watch the rest of the film. A title sequence is also very important(giving credit to every participate).
  4. Friday the 13th, Crimson Peak,  Happy Death day, & etc.

2.
  1. Horror
  2. Horror film content primarily focuses of the details and making sure that the film has the audience attention. Horror films cannot just have the element of shock because if the audience attention is not attained then they will not get shocked. The content must be “out of the norm but well received by the audience.”
  3. Sound plays a big role in production techniques for sound. When a jump scare is about to occur the louder sound get create a tense mood in the theater keep the audience scared. Horror films don’t necessarily have a certain guideline to follow when it comes to techniques. A dark unexposed environment like inside a house with dimmed lights or outside with the night sky creates the gloomy atmosphere. Dreadful dialogue also creates intense atmosphere.
  4. Horror films are marketed in different ways. The trailers play a huge role with marketing. A trailer that leaves the audience in aw and makes the audience want to watch it. This means that the trailer might be scarier than the actual film just to attract a certain audience group.  As well as keeping the audience that watched the trailer with something they can remember. For instance in the movie IT the balloon and for the conjuring its the tree.
  5. The movie IT is a good example of the horror genre. The movie takes place primarily in very dark places. There are a lot of jump scares which then zoom in on the one doing the scarring to terrify the audience. These jump scares are also accompanied with a certain sound to keep the audience tense and engaged. But not all of the sounds are accompanied with jump scares which is evidence that horror films don’t have a certain guideline.
  6. The conjuring is another movie which is a great example of the horror genre. The conjuring scares always take place at a certain time. The scares always begin with filming a space that feels very gloomy and foreshadowing something bad might happen. For instance, before the first scares the camera goes around the house then goes upstairs and a slight sound creates a terrifying atmosphere. There is also a dampened tone in the light throughout the entire movie to uphold the atmosphere that wants to be portrayed.

Hi my name is Carlos Gimon this is my first blog. I am gonna be speaking about horror movies and how they are produced in a certain manner. I chose this genre because I am an adrenaline type of guy that is into these type of movies. These movies have no guide lines which I find very interesting because horror movies are being well done. I am gonna be studying this genre throughout the next few weeks to really see how horror films are produced and marketed.
