Genre- Adventure
Genre conventions- A adventure movie is one long quest with a succession of different challenges, each one more frightening and seemingly impossible than the one before. Producers challenge in this type of genre is to ramp up the tension as the movie progresses. Usually from age 12 to adult.
The fonts on the movie boards are usually very grand. The font tries to put emphasis on the task at hand in every movie. Each movie board for adventure movies also puts the main actor or most famous one on the cover. For instance, the cover of mission impossible is Tom Cruise. This helps advertise the movie since Tom Cruise is very well known. Other techniques are camera techniques in the film. For instance, pan, zoom, and tracking camera movements are tricks commonly used in this type of genre. In the editing portion of the film cuts are used to show relationships. Lastly, adventurous movies usually have a specific mise-en scene, just like in star wars there is the futuristic feel due to many aspects.
An issue that I would like to represent through this genre is racism. Racism is the discrimination of groups of people because one feels superior to them. One example within the media of this issue is represented is the movie Schindler’s list. This movie is about World War 2. A man called Oskar Schindler living is living in Poland when Nazis’ take over. Schindler is concerned with his Jewish workforce after witnessing what the Nazis’ were doing to them. As a result, Schindler begins to protect Jews. This is a good representation of the issue because its a historic example of racism put in a movie.
Another representation of this video through media is the movie 12 years a slave. This movie is about a man named Solomon Northup that is a free black man living in New York. Solomon's life takes an extreme turn when he gets kidnapped and sold into slavery. Solomon now must go through many different types of cruelty until his 12th year as a slave is his last. This is also a great representation of racism due to the fact that slavery is colored people put to work because they are not considered a “person” at that time which is absurd.
I feel that these media examples have good representation characteristics. I think they are correct when it comes to representing racism in a certain period of time. I would retain the inequality portion of each movie. But the cruelty part I would not be able to retain because racism is in different forms not a days and not so much through cruelty. I would have to challenge the cruelty part because it's not a true representation of how it is occurring in the present.
